Bays finished there pre season build up with 2 games against Halswell and Burnside in the Coastal Tournament.
We were unlucky against Halswell, going down 1-0 after being the better side for long periods. Bays were guilty of numerous missed chances and were punished for one bad mistake.
A similar story against Burnside with missed chances haunting us once again, although Burnside had more possession than us. We were once again our own worst enemies, as twice we had the ball in the corner at the Burnside end of the field, instead of putting the ball into the box we made wayward passes and Burnside broke away to deliver killer blows.
Hopefully we will have learned lessons from these games as we prepare for the start of the MPL this weekend.
20th March 2010
Bays v Woolston Tech.
Bays went into this game on a high following last weeks 5-0 romp. They looked as thought they were on track for another victory following a bright start to the game and a Chris Murphy goal, following a corner by Adam Dowson. Despite missing players they looked in control for the first 30 minutes. But some players switched off and Tech broke away for an equaliser as the Bays defence appealed in vain for an offside. Wiremu Piercey had a 1 on 1 opportunity that went begging and the teams finished all square at half time. The second period saw Tech on the offensive early on and they were awarded a silly disputed penalty on the hour. Stand in keeper Stefan Dujanovic had the opportunity to clear a harmless through ball, but instead he tried to let the ball run out of play and was adjudged by the referee to have obstructed the Tech forward, much to the amazement of both teams coach's and supporters. The spot kick was easily converted. This seemed to knock Bays confidence and Tech were now having much more of the ball. As the game neared its conclusion, Bays pushed forward looking for the equaliser and they allowed a Tech striker too much room and he beat the keeper to end the game 3-1.
Captain for the night Chris Murphy led by example and had an excellent game, he was well supported by Adam Dowson and Drew Sherman, but the the rest of the midfield were AWOL far too often and we didn't create enough chances in open play. The defence had an ok night as we had to play several players out of position in a makeshift back four.
On reflection... howling goalkeeping errors killed us for the 2nd time in this tournament.. we didn't show enough fight throughout our midfield.. we allowed a team back into the game too easily... we squandered what opportunities we created..
But some positives came out of the game, again all 16 players got a run and I am learning things about some of the players games... Plus the fact we will hopefully have our Canterbury United players available part way into the season.
I am still on the lookout for new players to strengthen the squad..

Bays v Coastal Spirit.
New signings Tom Sansom & Drew Sherman scored all the goals between them, in Bays 5-0 romp against Coastal Spirit in their 2nd game of the pre season tournament at Rangers Park last night.
Sansom fired a superb hat-trick and Sherman added the other 2 as both players opened their account for the season.
Bays put in a much improved performance, they played with more intensity and didn't allow Coastal into the game. The first 30 minutes saw Bays well on top without scoring, but once Sherman had slotted home Adam Dowson's cross on the half hour and Sansom smashed home a volley on 40 mins the game was pretty much won. Although Coastal came out buzzing in the second half Bays defence & midfield held firm, weathered the storm and pushed forward to dominate the rest of the half, scoring 3 more goals to put the icing on the cake. The whole team were excellent on the night and they have now set the standards that we need to maintain from now on.
Man of the match was given to Tom Sansom for his hard work and 3 goals...
9th March 2010
Bays 1 - 3 Nomads.
Bays put in a below par performance last night, going down 3-1 against a good Nomads side, in the opening Coastal Pre Season Tournament at Eric Adam Park.
Bays started on the back foot and were under pressure for long periods of the 1st half, a mistake by keeper Richard Aymes who missed a cross, led to Nomads opener, midway through the 1st half. Wiremu Piercey missed a gilt edged opportunity to equalise before Nomads hit the bar just before the interval.
Bays came out for the second half determined to put in a better showing, but they were rocked after 5 minutes when a throw from the keeper put Mark McGale under pressure as he slipped, allowing a Nomads striker to fire home. Another mistake midway through the half saw Nomads go 3-0 up before Bays started to play better. Tom Goodwin fired home a glorious 25 yard screamer near the end, but this was only a consolation.
Nomads closed Bays down early to force errors and deny them space, but most times a Nomads player received the ball he was given ample space to play, we were also 2nd to most balls and didn't look competative or strong enough in some areas.
This game has certainly opened my eyes and we will have to improve significantly when we take on Coastal Spirit next Thursday..

"PRE SEASON FRIENDLY" Bays 5 - 1 Mid Canterbury
A mix of 1st Team, Reserves plus a couple of youth team players had a run out against Division 1 side Mid Canterbury at the weekend.
In very hot conditions the game was played in 3 x 30 minute periods.
Bays played some neat football and it was no surprise to see them record an easy 5-1 victory.
We took some positives from the game, kept good possesion, passed the ball around well and took our chances. Nice to see Wiremu Piercey scoring and a hat-trick from Adam Dowson, playing his first game for a while after a long lay off through injury.
15 & 16 year olds Rian Hooper and Aran Stelling had excellent games and did not look out of place in a midfield controlled by Jose Matiz.
The only blot on the day was how we were still asleep at the start of period 2, allowing Mid Canty to score with ease. But we came back strongly to score 3 quick goals in reply.
Overall a worthwhile exercise and puts us in the right frame of mind for next Tuesday's (2nd March) Coastal Tournament game against Nomads... K-O 6.15pm at Eric Adam Park..

Fitness Training.
I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Damian Simpson, for all the Pre Season fitness work that he has been doing with the players.
We identified an area that we felt needed work... Player Fitness... Both physically and mentally..
Damian who is a personal fitness trainer and runs his own gym "FITNESS 326" in Sumner has designed a program for the players..
We have been training Tues, Thurs & Sun for the past 4 weeks and his hard work is starting to show.
I like the team building work he is doing and by the start of the season we will be a pretty tight unit..
THANKS AGAIN DAMIAN...... KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.... GOOD LUCK.....

New Signings.
I have been doing some pre season recruiting for the 1st Team Squad.
So far I am pleased to have aquired the services of the following new players.
Jose Matiz.. A creative midfielder from Coastal Spirit.
Tom Sansom.. A quality Midfielder who has spent the past couple of seasons at Tech & Cashmere. I am confident he will make an impact on the Premier League this season.
Drew Sherman.. A front runner / striker from the UK. Drew has played a high grade level of football and had a spell at Derby County in the UK. He is currently working as a coach for the Everton Academy in Christchurch.
Adam Dowson.. A left sided midfield / wide player. Adam has been a good young player I have always liked, but he has been plagued by injuries. Hopefully now that he is fit he will push for a 1st team place.
Ross McKenzie.. A quality striker from Dunedin. Just finished his studies. Ross has had spells at Scottish League club Dundee as well as Akron University in the USA. He has also played NZFC with Team Wellington and Auckland City.
Omid Radjabi.. A young Afghani boy who has a lot of ability. Plays at full back, Omid will be pushing hard for a place in the squad and he will only improve with experience.
The other good news is that we have retained the bulk of last season's 1st team players that are available to play, only losing Paris Kerdermelides to Christchurch United. Although Batram Suri will be hard to replace, he is not coming over to NZ this winter.
Top scorer Hue Frame was due to go overseas but he has now delayed those plans and will be a great asset to the team for at least a third of the season. I am still very hopeful that I can re sign Canterbury United players Dan Terris and Jordan Swaney. I am confident they will like the new professional approach Bays are taking and if they do play for us again I am confident we can push for top 3 finish at least.
I have also signed some good young players for the reserves in the Player Development League.
They may not be ready for 1st team football just yet but they will not be a long way off, a season in the reserve team will help to bring them on heaps.
These players so far are Rian Hooper, Aran Stelling, Joe Davies, Jafar Ibrahimi, Martin Taylor and a couple of others I am currently looking at.
These young players will be aided in their development by some of the more experienced players we are assembling for the season.
The resrerve team coach will, this year have a reasonable amount of talent to work with.

Bays v Coastal Spirit.
Bays have an opportunity to redeem themselves on Thursday night, They take on Coastal in the 2nd round of the pre season tournament.
Coastal will be out to show their fans that they should be playing Premier League this season.
Bays will need to show that they have the passion to make ammends for last weeks poor performance.
I will be without 5 players for the game and goalkeeper Tim Shaw is out to show he is good enough for 1st team football.
3 players from our youth team are in the squad, they have all done well so far and at 15 & 16 years old, they look great prospects for our future.
