Bays 11th Grade v Auckland Sporting Academy

Club President, Brian Dawes, and the Bays 11th Grade Div 1 team welcome an Auckland Sporting Academy side during their tour of Christchurch. The Auckland team are visiting Christchurch for  a weeks worth of games against local opposition. Playing on a smaller pitch than usual, with the rain closing all of Bays intermediate fields, it was a tight and hard fought game. An Early save by keeper Nika Ross, kept Bays in the game before Bays hit an early problem with striker Sam Philip coming off with a groin injury. But a free kick outside the Auckland penalty area saw Joe Bell score and get Bays ahead. Half time saw the score even more in Bays favour with Seb  Redfern slotting a well taken goal. The second half saw Joe score again making the final score 3-0 in an very exciting and well spirited friendly. We wish the Auckland team a happy rest of tour down here and hope to see them here, or in Auckland, again

Bays 11th grade triumphs

The bays 11th grade teams have had some excellent results as the season reaches it's mid way point and the opening competition is concluded in some leagues. In the First Division the Bays A team, coached by Richard Bell, won the league with a final tally of won 8 drew 1, in the Second Division the Bays B team coached by Tony Lawson came top also with a sheet of won 6 drew 2. To complete the set  Bays Cougars, coached by Craig McInnes and Mick Ingram,  are currently top of their division. These are excellent results across the age group and shows the depth of talent Bays have at this level.

In Division 1 strong competition from the usual suspects, Halswell, Waimak, Burnside and Woolston was fended off by a superb defence who have only allowed 4 goals past them so far this season and a high scoring Sam Philip with 18 goals so far. But the depth of the team is apparent with 8 of the team scoring goals. Playing out of a very skilled and mature mid-field the team is looking forward to trying to keep the form in the second competition that makes up the latter part of the season.

Junior football is thriving at the club with many of this years 9th grade taking up the opportunity to build their skills, ready for next years top teams, by taking part in the Academy. As a foundation for playing top level football the Academy is invaluable. It should be noted that many of the 11th grade Div 1 and 2 players have been part of the Academy for the last 3 years and the hard work they have put in there has reaped dividends this year with the results mentioned above. With a new term a few weeks away if you are a junior player wanting to push your football it may be worth contacting Mick Braithwaite and enquiring about spaces available.

Well done to all junior Bays players who, across all the grades and divisions are playing exciting and fun football. As ever none of this would be without the many volunteer coaches we have who put in hours of effort and commitment as well - thank you. Go the Bays.

11th Grade take part in Eastgate fun.

Some of the 11th grade squad took part in a big sport/activity event at Eastgate over 16 & 17th April. Part of a Sport Canterbury initiative to encourage people to be active, the days involved Ferrymead Bays and other sports teams like the Tactix. The boys selected children form the crowd and took them through some small drills, teaching them the some basic ball skills. Each session was a great success with many taking part.
